Dry, Itchy, Flaky Scalp in the Winter?
Its that time of year again when I hear a lot of complaining about dry itchy, flaky scalp. A lot of people mistaken the itchy, flaky scalp for dandruff when in reality what it really is dry scalp. So how do you tell the difference?
- Dandruff: Is a larger, greasy or waxy flakes or cluster of skin cells and are usually yellowish or grey looking.
- Dry Scalp: Is small white flakes of scalp.
- Dry scalp can be caused by a number of things: including dehydration, over shedding of the scalp, poor quality hair products, over washing your hair, hot water, change of seasons and it can also just be genetic.
- There are a few things you can do about it: Make sure you’re well hydrated, drinking water not only helps your scalp but also the rest of your skin and body. Try to wash your hair in cooler water, and maybe not every day, for most people that is not necessary. Switching to a professional shampoo & conditioner can really help, as they don’t strip away the natural oils in your hair and scalp. Finally you can also try gently brushing your scalp before you wash your hair.
