<<Frederick County Government has announced the winners of its annual Business Waste Reduction and Recycling Award. The County has an established goal of diverting 60% of its waste from landfill
disposal by 2025 and the Department of Solid Waste Management actively promotes a philosophy of “Recycle More. Waste Less.” Since businesses account for roughly half of the waste generated, this award program provides public recognition for local organizations that have demonstrated leadership in their efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle.>> <<from Frederick County Department of Solid Waste NR>>
“Recycling waste in general is common sense, right? But through Green Circle Salons (GCS) we get to do some really cool – and unexpected – stuff! All of the products at the shop are already eco-friendly, but through GCS water is extracted from used product through a centrifuge process and then added back into reservoirs. Not to mention this one guy who actually recycles hair (typically used to sop up oil spills and fertilize soil – both super cool) into granite-like furniture! Crazy cool, right?!,” said Earl Pindar, owner and master stylist at Natural Fusion. “We’re so happy to keep making strides toward protecting and preserving our environment and hope others will continue to do so, too. And we’re grateful to DSWM for all the work they do to keep sustainability in the spotlight!” he added.
<<“Waste reduction can be as easy as rethinking the way you’ve always done things and making a few simple changes. The choices these businesses have made inspire their employees as well as their customers to “think green” and conserve resources,” said Donna Corbus, Business Recycling Program Analyst for Frederick County.>><<from Frederick County Department of Solid Waste NR>>

<<The Natural Fusion Hair Studio, located in the City of Frederick, has gone above and beyond in operating a sustainable shop. They are the first salon in the state to recycle salon waste and are now Maryland’s Green Circle Salon. The owners have achieved a 95% reduction in their salon waste through the program. As a Green Circle Salon, they recycle hair and other salon waste such as hair products. This recycling service costs the owners $400 per month—a cost which is not passes on to customers as the usual “environmental fee.” The owners are encouraging other salons in Frederick to join the Green Circle Salon partnership. They also are using sustainable products in their shop. In addition, they have instituted a number of sustainable practices throughout the site such as implementing LED and natural lighting, reuse of materials for furniture, and a native plant garden.>> <<from Frederick County Sustainability Commission NR>>
“We have worked really hard to achieve the highest level of sustainability possible – and we’re nowhere near done, yet! We would have been doing it anyway because we are passionate about the environment. So to be formally recognized is a real honor,” said Earl Pindar, owner and master stylist at Natural Fusion.
<<”We are proud to recognize these outstanding champions of sustainability who have provided leadership to the rest of us on how to create a bright future for Frederick County,” said FCSC Chair, Tom Anderson.>><<from Frederick County Sustainability Commission NR>>
About Frederick County Sustainability Commission
The Frederick County Sustainability Commission (https://frederickcountymd.gov/3553/Frederick-County-Sustainability-Commissi) represents the natural environment’s critical relevance in making community decisions that will sustain for all time a healthy, abundant, affordable and inspiring place to live and work.
Frederick Salon is Maryland’s First to Join Eco Initiative to Keep the Planet More Beautiful
As the first and only Maryland member of Green Circle Salons, Natural Fusion Hair Studio is beginning a comprehensive recycling / reuse program that will help us to significantly reduce our environmental impact on the planet. The program helps us to redirect out of water streams and landfills everything once considered as garbage: hair (in 2010 Green Circle Salons sent more than 1,000 pounds of hair to the Gulf of Mexico to help clean the BP oil spill), foils, color tubes, paper, plastics, and liquid chemical waste (most salons today simply rinse all leftover liquid chemicals into the sink and down the drain).
With today’s age of GREEN & ECO-RESPONSIBILTY, the new buzz words in business are changing us for the better! We are very excited to take our industry in a new direction with exceptional standards of environmental accountability. The beauty industry poses many challenges to the environment, from sourcing of ingredients to disposal of packaging and products. Through our alignment with Green Circle Salons, we hope to ameliorate our ecological footprint by implementing simple green changes that will make both our salon, and our industry, more sustainable. We are proud of this new partnership and knowing that Green Circle Salons is 100% traceable and fully accountable for how they handle the materials we give them.
What does this mean for our customers?
- Easily and quickly identify North America’s green salon leaders through an online GCS Directory & smartphone app.
- Today, consumers vote with their dollars. People make the choices for change. With the Green Circle platform, we empower green consumers with choices that support both environmental and social progress. We can now improve the beauty of our clients and the planet at the same time.
- Peace of mind knowing that their salon has taken meaningful steps to keep our communities healthy
- By supporting our salon, they contribute to local and international community development, as well as environmental research and innovation.
“We are stoked about this new relationship with Green Circle Salons – not just because it brings us one huge step closer to being a 100% sustainable shop, but because the initiative itself is wicked cool! They take product containers, packaging, even HAIR, and turn each into something that gives back to the planet – you can’t get more eco-friendly than that!” said Earl Pindar, co-owner and master stylist at Natural Fusion Hair Studio.
Natural Fusion Hair Studio already uses products safe for the environment. This change, though, enables their salon to eliminate 95% of their salon waste such as product containers and packaging – taking their goal to be fully sustainable to the next level. “What we are most excited about is to bring this offering to the Frederick community where not just us, but all salons can take the step toward preserving our environment by ensuring their salon waste recycled and disposed of properly. We can’t wait to spread the news and get others on board!” said Kelly Chapin, co-owner at Natural Fusion Hair Studio.
Did you know that currently all aluminum foils and color tubes are not being recycled and are sent to landfill?
Recycling aluminum uses roughly 5% of the energy required to create virgin aluminum from bauxite. Ninety- five percent of all aluminum can be recycled over and over again, including the foils and color tubes that are used in salons across North America. From now, GCS Member Salons will take an environmentally responsible stand and ensure that all metals are properly recycled. This will help to reduce the need for more landfill space, reduce our dependence on non-renewable resources, and decrease the amount of toxins going into our landfill sites.
Did you know hair when placed in garbage bags will mummify, continue to fill our landfill, and give off methane gas?
GCS Member Salons will now be diverting all hair out of landfill and into other more sustainable projects. GCS, in connection with various partners, is looking at ways that hair can play an important role in a number of commercial applications. It’s exciting to know that hair can be used on our oceans to help in oil spill clean up and recovery projects.
Did you know that all excess chemicals including color, perm solutions and ammonia get rinsed down the sink into our water stream?
This is the ugly truth of the industry. Our solution will be to send all excess color waste to a hazardous waste facility where they will be incinerated to produce clean energy!

Local Salon Officially Commits to Supporting Locks of Love Donors After Touching Encounter
November 19, 2015 — Natural Fusion Hair Studio (www.naturalfusionhairstudio.com), a high-end, boutique salon located downtown, has committed to support well-known Locks of Love (www.locksoflove.org) by providing donors with complimentary haircuts to help prepare their hair donations for delivery to the non-profit. Long-time supporters of the organization and co-owners of Natural Fusion Hair Studio (Natural Fusion), Earl Pindar and wife Kelly Chapin, have made it official – anyone seeking to donate their hair to Locks of Love is invited to come to their salon to have their tresses cut for free.
For years Natural Fusion has helped prepare hair donations for Locks of Love, but after meeting new client Seung Yi and hearing the story behind his contribution, they decided it was time to commit. During the haircut, Yi shared that his mother had passed away and her hair loss during chemo was the inspiration behind making the donation. “I saw how much hair can affect a person’s being and feeling of normalcy,” he said.
It took him three years to grow his hair out to meet the donation criteria and on selecting a salon to make the cut Yi said, “We want to be as chemical free as possible in all aspects of our lives and we know Natural Fusion can help us with that while delivering salon style and service,” thus, Natural Fusion made the cut.
“It’s my pleasure and privilege to serve people like Seung and to take part in something as important as Locks of Love,” said industry veteran Pindar, “I’m excited to meet more great people [donors] like Seung and help them with their donations,” he added.
